5,821 people committed suicide in 2017. Nearly 4,400 were male. The total road traffic deaths that year was just 1,793. Suicide is more than three times the number of road traffic fatalities.
A father, a brother, a son, a male will commit suicide every two hours in the UK. That's 12 a day. Every six days, we experience another Grenfell Towers. Every eight days we experience another Hillsborough disaster.
Suicide is the biggest killer of men between the ages of 16 and 45. A tragic waste of potential and an unrecoverable blow to those left behind. Men, well, we just don't talk about the dark times, we are real men and we keep it hidden. But that's wrong, it's not how it works, nor should it be.
Andy's Man Club is a place where men can meet to help each other get through the dark times. Currently, there are twenty places to meet throughout the UK including our local branches of Dundee, Perth and Dunfermline - we need more.
On the 18th August 2019, along with 3,000 others, I shall be doing the 25 mile Dundee Kilt Walk in aid of Andy's Man Club. I will be wearing my kilt in true Scottish style.
Dig deep, let's try to eliminate this killer.
